The modern history of Nadym dates back to fall of 1967, when almost empty at that time cantonment was chosen as a support base for development of gas deposit Medvezhye. Moreover, today the town has stable prospects of economic growth. On the territory of Nadym region over 40 percent of all Russian gas is extracted. Over 36 developed deposits contribute to the future of the municipality. Due to development of new deposits, the output of hydrocarbon materials keeps going up. 37 percent of Yamal gas and 19 percent of oil is produced on the territory of Nadym region. Exploration and prospect evaluation surveys never stop in the region. The explored oil reserves come up to 250 million tons, gas reserves - over 7 trillion cubic meters.

The territory of the municipality is capital intensive; basically, affiliates of Gazprom are based here. However, positive changes in social-economic development of Nadym and Nadym region are due to independent producers of oil and gas. Setting up targets in mutually advantageous cooperation with them, based on social partnership, becomes common in relations with the administration of Nadym and its region on one side and the companies on the other side. On the territory of the municipality there is a range of successfully active companies like: JSC RITEK, CJSC Yamalgasinvest, CJSC Northgas, OJSC Sibneft-Noyabrskneftegaz, etc. Nadym region today can be easily called not only a gas one, but oil possessing one as well. In its economic policies Nadym region aims at long-term prospects paying great attention to rational usage of hydrocarbon materials. It means that the region is getting ready for implementing technologies for extraction and processing of low-pressure gas, the reserves of which in the deposits are estimated at 20 percent of the initial inventory. Only in four old deposits of Nadym region there are still big reserves at relatively low pressures - 1.1-1.3 trillion of cubic meters of gas.
Development of new gas and oil deposits is impossible without moving to the north of the region where indigenous people have lived for centuries. Nadym is trying to solve these problems emphasizing real support of indigenous inhabitants of the North, about three thousands of who live in the municipality.
