The town of Gybkinsky is located on the south of Purovsky region on the left bank of the River Pyaku-Pur. It is situated in the zone of north taiga, where alongside coniferous species grow foliage trees. The picturesque land is abundant with meadows rich in herbs, and reindeer moss pastures.
The town emerged on the back of industrial development of a group of the northernmost oil deposits in Tyumen, prospective in reserves and unique in their nature. Gubkinsky is conveniently located close to all the basic deposits and is connected by automobile highway and railway with the biggest cities of Western Siberia and all Russia.
The key town resource, its main potential is its population, which is a bit over 25,000, the average age being just 26 years old.
The explored reserves of oil and gas in the region are enough for 100 years more. The principal enterprise of the town is OJSC Rosneft-Purneftegaz; a branch of OJSC Surgutgazprom - Komsomolsky Gazovy Promysel - works successfully increasing its capacities. All in all, in Gubkinsky there are about a thousand registered enterprises. The town administration keeps caring for raising the comfort of living: the housing complex has modern conveniences, the phone network is developed, shops and pharmacies are active, there are bakeries and pastry stores, a milk plant and restaurants. Children's pre-school institutions and schools are open; they are connected with the best higher institutions of the country.
In the city there are two recreation centers, cultural leisure center, libraries, a music school, a sports school for children. Talking of cultural leisure, we cannot help mentioning the Museum of Exploration of the North, which is in top 20 of the best Russian museums and which received three grants for implementing its projects.
In December 1996 Gubkinsky received the status of a town of regional subordination. In spite of the fact that the town is young, Gubkinsky has everything that distinguishes a town from a village. In the last years all the town administrative units have been created and staffed, and are now working successfully. Gubkinsky itself has changed notably. Next to the old village wooden two-storey blocks has soared a housing complex of five-storey buildings where gasmen live; there are also nine-storey buildings soaring above the town...
The town courageously looks forward to its further growth. The volume of extracted oil augments from year to year; the technology of extraction and processing of hydrocarbon materials is improved. Altogether with oil workers, one of the youngest towns of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District - the town of Gubkinsky - will be growing and prospering.
