Purovsky region

Purovsky region was named after the river Pur, in the basin of which it is located. If translated from Nenets, 'Pur' stands for 'a big whitewater boisterous river'. The river Pur divides the region into almost equal left- and right-bank areas. The spread of the region from north to south is over 600 kilometers. The southern border with Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District is 530 kilometers long. The territory of Purovsky region is 108,400 square kilometers; the population is almost 200,000 people, including over 4,000 of indigenous population. In its size, it's the third region in the autonomous district after Tazovsky and Yamalsky regions.

The administrative region center is Tarko-Sale (translated from Nenets as 'a settlement on a cape with an outshoot, or a fork-cape'). As an administrative-territorial unit, the region was founded on January 7, 1932. In the region area there are settlements of district subordination: the towns of Noyabrsk, Gubkinsky, Muravlenko. Tarko-Sale is connected by air with Salekhard, Tyumen and Moscow. The region territory is crossed by the railway Tyumen-Novy Urengoy.

The region shows itself as a unique territory of the Russian far north. The basin of the river Pur has been considered as a Russian Klondike for a long time. 'The region is severe and quite rich. The forests are abundant with red beast. The rivers and lakes are affluent and bounteous with fish,' that was a description by pioneer explorers of these reserved lands sprawling in the very north of West-Siberian plain. Four centuries later, this list of riches was completed with ocean-wide reserves of oil and gas, which defined the way of development of the whole region. The region possesses huge oil and gas reserves. Development of hydrocarbons in the region in 1965 led to emergence of new towns and villages, automobile- and rail roads, oil- and gas-pipes, large enterprises, created on the basis of modern technologies for processing of raw materials.

Today the region economy is determined by oil- and gas workers (90 percent of oil and 50 percent of gas of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District is extracted on the territory of Purovsky region). Of 175 gas-, gas-condensate and oil deposits developed in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District, 114 are situated on the territory of Purovsky region. Purovsky region is also rich in nonmetallic mineral resources; there are 42 known deposits of clay, diatomites, sand and gravel.

At the moment Purovsky region is one of fast developing regions of the district; large enterprises of extractive industry work here: OJSC Sibneft-Noyabrskneftegaz, OJSC Rosneft-Purneftegaz, OJSC Purneftegazgeologya, OJSC Urengoyneftegazgeologya.

The basic trades of the local population are deer farming, fur farming, fishing and preserving of wild plants. The region counts over 30,000 deers; fur farms keep about a thousand units of fur animals. Deer fur and skins processing takes place in sovkhozes. Unossified antlers of reindeers are preserved to produce drugs.

The region has well-developed game-hunting. The main commercial species are polar fox, fox, sable, weasel, musk beaver and squirrel. There are also elk, wild deer, upland- and water fowl hunted. Purovsky fish plant manufactures smoked, fresh-frozen, dried and salted fish. The prospects of fishing developing are closely connected with development of resources of small and medium lakes.

For the unique character and virtual inexhaustibility of hydrocarbon reserves, valuable mineral riches and economic significance of flora and fauna, Purovsky region has wide development prospects.
